Hot Cross Buns

BABY BLUES (or LIVVIE'S FAULT)

7. HOT CROSS BUNS (03/01/2005)

by Adrienne Lee and Miranda Rafferty

Olivia looked at the steadily falling snow and gave an involuntary shudder. "It's cold out there, Sweetheart."

"You just don't love me anymore." The blonde sniffled.

"Yes, I do, but there's a foot of snow on the ground and more coming down." Olivia usually caved at the first sniffle from Alex, but the weather was simply too frightful.

Alex placed her hands on her rounded stomach; she said sadly, "You never let anything stop you when I was pregnant with Alexis."

"You didn't do this with Alexis. Besides, it was the summer and fall for most of your pregnancy. The weather was beautiful, not the dead of winter in Chicago. They don't call it the 'Windy City' for nothing."

"That's not the reason they call it that. It's because of the politicians and how much they talk, and if you really loved me, the weather wouldn't matter." A small tear hovered at the corner of her eye.

Olivia had suddenly decided to grow a backbone. "I did get shot, you know, and I'm supposed to be recuperating.”

"Getting shot didn't seem to slow you down any this morning," Alex countered.

"Would it have mattered?" Olivia asked.

"Let’s look at it this way, you stressed me out by getting yourself shot. You had to play hero when you could’ve just walked away. And I'm not supposed to get upset. It's all your fault," the blonde explained as if a child should understand.

"But, Alex! It's really cold out there," the brunette whined.

"You know, for a big city detective, you're a wuss. Just make sure you wear your heavy coat and gloves." Alex returned to her magazine, dismissing Olivia to her appointed errand.

"I don't even know what hot cross buns look like."

"You have a very talented mouth ... just ask."

With no other options in sight, Olivia set out on her sojourn. She drove for blocks and blocks, finally finding a 24 hour Jewel two miles away. There, she picked up every type of bun she could find -- cinnamon, jellied, cream filled, plain... If the pastry looked remotely like a bun, she got one.

Finally home again, she opened the boxes of buns one at the time and presented them to Alex for her inspection. She wasn’t surprised when none of them turned out to be what her partner wanted.

"Did you even ask?" The blonde accused.

"There was no one to ask. It's not like they have anyone in the bakery at this time of the night," Olivia defended herself.

"I had my taste buds all set for hot cross buns."

"Wait here, I've got an idea. I'll be right back," Olivia said and hurried out of the room.

"Like I’m going anywhere!” Alex called after her partner petulantly. “It’s all your fault." She huddled down in bed, and sulked.

A few minutes later, Olivia walked in without a stitch on. “Here.” She handed Alex a can of whip cream, and turned around. Bending over and wiggling her ass, she gave her partner her cheesiest grin. "Make your own?"
